Das Monochrome Rechteck ist eines von vier Entwürfen (Wember M1 - M4), die Yves Klein für die Veröffentlichung des Textes «La Minute de Verité» von Pierre Restany in der revue «Couleurs» (Nr. 18, 1956, S. 10) anfertigte. Yves Klein ist in dieser Zeitschrift sitzend abgebildet und hält eine monochrome, rote Fläche in der rechten Hand. Seit Mitte der 1950er Jahre setzte Klein in seiner Malerei verstärkt monochrome Farbflächen als Ausdrucksmittel ein. Die reine Farbe bedeutete für ihn totale Freiheit, die sich durch eine zweite Farbe in ein bloßes Schauspiel verwandeln würde. Eine weitere Farbe sowie auch Linien oder eine Zeichnung entfachen in Kleins Augen nur einen Streit zwischen zwei Personen. Der Betrachter würde aufgefordert werden, sich für eine Seite zu entscheiden und müsste die Freiheit der reinen Farbe aufgeben. «Die Seele empfinden ohne zu erklären...das ist, was mich zur Monochromie geführt hat.»
