Stehende Mambila-Tadep-Figur

In Mambila sculpture the gesture of the hand to the chin is characteristic of this kind of Tadep figures connected with a healing association called Suaga. Two types of carved anthropomorphic figure belongs to the ritual: one is Kike made from raffia palm pith and one is Tadep carved from wood. Although the Suaga complex is still remained a central part of the religious system of the Mambila, most figures have been purchased owing to their popularity among Western art collectors.
Provenance: purchased before 1960; since then private collection Stuttgart.

Die an das Kinn gehaltene Hand charakterisiert in der Skulptur der Mambila eine Tadep-Figur, die mit einer heilenden Bedeutung verbunden ist und Suaga genannt wird. Zum Ritus gehören zwei geschnitzte anthropomorphe Figuren: die aus Bastpalmenmark hergestellte Kike und die aus Holz geschnitzte Tadep. Obwohl der Suaga bis heute zum festen Bestandteil der Religion der Mambila gehört, wurden viele Figuren und Masken aufgrund ihrer Popularität von westlichen Sammlern erworben.
