Der Apfel, den das Jesuskind in den Händen hält, weist auf die Gegenüberstellung von Maria und Eva hin. Eva hat mit dem vom Paradiesbaum gepflückten Apfel die Erbsünde über die Menschheit gebracht. Maria hingegen überwindet mit der unbefleckten Empfängnis und der Geburt des Erlösers die Erbsünde. Der Apfel wird somit zum Symbol der Gnade und des Lebens.

The apple that the baby Jesus is holding in his hands refers to the comparison of Mary and Eve. With the apple picked from the tree of paradise, Eve brought original sin upon mankind. Mary, on the other hand, overcomes the original sin with the immaculate conception and the birth of the redeemer. The apple thus becomes a symbol of grace and life.
