Josephs Traum
Wohl Süddeutsch 18. Jh. Holz geschnitzt, rückseitig gehöhlt und farbig gefasst. Schlafender Joseph in blauem Gewand, den Kopf in die Hand gelegt. Altersspuren, Fassungsverluste, Wurmfraß, Fehlstellen.

Gemäß der Erzählung des Matthäusevangeliums begegnet der Zimmermann Joseph von Nazareth im Traum einem Engel, von dem er den göttlichen Auftrag erhält, seine Verlobte Maria zu ehelichen, obwohl sie nicht von ihm schwanger ist. Dadurch wurde Josephs Traum zu einer wichtigen biblischen Episode, die die Empfängnis Mariens durch den Heiligen Geist bezeugt. Doch nicht nur wegen seines ersten Traumes wird Joseph oft schlafend dargestellt. Auch die Weisung zur Flucht nach Ägypten soll er auf diesem Wege erhalten haben.

Saint Joseph's dream
Probably South Germany 18th C. Carved wood, verso hollowed and painted in polychrome colours. Sleeping Joseph in blue robe, resting his head in his hand. Signs of age, paint loss, worm damage, missing parts.

According to the story of the Gospel of Matthew, the carpenter Joseph of Nazareth meets an angel in a dream, from whom he receives the divine commission to marry his fiancée Mary, although she is not pregnant by him. Thus, Joseph's dream became an important biblical episode that testifies to the conception of Mary by the Holy Spirit. But it is not only because of his first dream that Joseph is often depicted asleep. He is also said to have received the instruction to flee to Egypt in this way.
