Haarlem school follower
Netherlands 18th C.
Rest at the edge of the forest.
Oil on canvas, relined. Monogrammed «N.B.» lower left. Verso on the stretcher numbered «2367/1» and indistinctly inscribed.
H 49,5, W 73,5 cm (support). Elaborate frame.
The warm sunlight of a late summer evening fills the feathery branches of an old willow tree; beyond a dry, sandy junction of paths, the view opens out into an endless, flat landscape of fields and meadows. On soft tufts of grass, a peasant family has settled down for refreshment, while a white horse drinks water from a stream. The unknown 18th century monogramist N.B. skilfully adapted characteristics of the works of a legendary generation of Haarlem landscape painters, such as Salomon van Ruysdael (1600 - 1670) or Jakob van Ruisdael (1628/29 - 1682), including the naturalistic perception of botanical details, a discreet genre-like narrative and the harmonious overall impression radiating perfect tranquillity.
Provenance: private collection Munich.
