Werner, Anton Alexander von
1843 Frankfurt a.d.O. - 1915 Berlin.
«König Karl v. Würtemberg (King Charles of Württemberg)». Pencil on wove paper, with tear-off edge at the upper margin. Monogrammed lower right and dated «Versailles 1871». Titled lower left and badly legible inscribed «Siebr(...)» upper right. Light-stained, creasing.
H 34,7, W 24,1 cm (sheet). Unframed.
Study of the Proclamation of the German Empire, taking place in Versailles 1871. Werner painted four variants of this event, whereas three paintings unfortunately got lost during the World War II. Only the variation for Otto von Bismarck in Friedrichsruh is preserved. For Werner, this painting meant the rise up to be one of the most important painters in the German Empire.
Provenance: South German noble house.
Literature: Thomas W. Gaehtgens, Anton von Werner. Die Proklamierung des Deutschen Kaiserreichs: Ein Historienbild im Wandel preußischer Politik, Frankfurt a.M. 1990, ill. 3 as well as picture board at the back (cf.).
