Lüpertz, Markus
Born 1941 Liberec/Bohemia, lives and works in Berlin, Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf and Florence.
Gun carriage with steel helmet.
Early 1970s. Charcoal and ink on wove paper. Signed lower right.
H 49, W 65 cm (sheet). Framed.
The drawing was created in the context of the so-called «Deutschen Motive (German motifs)», which Lüpertz dealt with from 1970 onwards. Here he drapes steel helmets, officers' caps and military equipment in still-life style, focusing on their formal characteristics. It is easy to understand that this was a provocation in 1970s Germany, and still is today. As part of an artistic process, the viewer is now called upon to engage with recent German history, to take a position, to learn for the future. The early work signed «Markus» was created around the large painting «Schwarz Rot Gold I - dithyrambisch» in the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart from 1974 with the inventory number 2014-032.
Provenance: Bassenge, Berlin, auction 101, 01.06.2013, lot 8232; since then private collection Karlsruhe.
Literature: Musée d'art Moderne de la ville de Paris (Ed.), Markus Lüpertz, a retrospective, Paris 2015, pp. 194 - 199 (cf.).
