Roman terra sigillata bowl
Probably Gaul 1st - 3rd C. AD. Brick-red gloss pottery. Mould-made. Low foot rim, body with circumferential frieze depicting Erotes playing in vines, bead and reel and cymatium, bulging lip. Indistinct potter stamp in the rotary frieze. Small missing parts. Restored. Fractures.
H 13, Diam. 26,5 cm.
The so-called Terra Sigillata is a red gloss pottery, mostly used as tableware, which was often decorated in relief with the help of models. It was widespread throughout the Roman Empire. The depiction here of the Erotes at the grape harvest has a connection to the cult of Bacchus, refers to culinary delights and is frequently found in Roman table culture.
Provenance: according to the consignor purchased in the art trade before 1974; since then private collection Dreisamtal.

deutsch Römische Terra Sigillata Schale
Wohl Gallien 1. - 3. Jh. n. Chr. Ziegelroter Scherben, mit Glanztonüberzug. Formgetöpfert. Niedriger Standring, hochwandiger Korpus mit umlaufendem Dekor, in Weinreben spielende Eroten darstellend, Astragal und Kymation, wulstige Lippe. Undeutlicher Töpferstempel im Reliefdekor. Kl. Fehlstellen. Altrest. Bruchstellen.
H. 13, D. 26,5 cm.
