Vita of Saint Nicholas of Myra
Russia early 19th C. Egg tempera over chalk and gold ground on panel. Icon with central, half-figure representation of Saint Nicholas with bible and omophorion, flanked by Christ and Mary, surrounded by twelve scenes from the life of the saint. Church Slavonic inscriptions indicate the events. Signs of age, surface soiling. Reverse sponki missing.
H 49,2, W 39,4 cm.
Of the 12,000 saints of the Orthodox Church, Saint Nicholas, who served as Bishop of Myra in the 4th century, is the most frequently depicted one. The picture fields of the vita icon show episodes from his life from his birth to his funeral, especially his numerous miracles.
Provenance: purchased at Helmut Brenske, Hanover, in 1973; since then private collection Lower Saxony.

deutsch Vita des Heiligen Nikolaus von Myra
Russland Anfang 19. Jh. Eitempera über Kreide- und Goldgrund auf Holz. Vitaikone mit zentraler, halbfiguriger Darstellung des Heiligen Nikolaus mit Bibel und Omophorion, flankiert von Christus und Maria, umgeben mit zwölf Szenen aus dem Leben des Heiligen. Kirchenslawische Inschriften geben das Geschehen an. Altersspuren, Oberflächenverschmutzung. Rückseitensponki fehlt.
H. 49,2, B. 39,4 cm.
Der von den 12.000 Heiligen der orthodoxen Kirche am häufigsten dargestellte ist der Heilige Nikolaus, der im 4. Jahrhundert als Bischof von Myra wirkte. Die Bildfelder der Vitaikone zeigen Episoden aus seinem Leben von seiner Geburt bis zu seinem Begräbnis, vor allem seine zahlreichen Wundertaten.
Provenienz: erworben 1973 bei Helmut Brenske, Hannover; seitdem Privatsammlung Niedersachsen.
