Merian, Matthäus the Younger after
Circa 1900.
«Bildnis des Hans Joachim Müller (portrait of Hans Joachim Müller)».
Oil on canvas. Indistinctly signed lower right and inscribed «Cop. n. Math. Merian» as well as «Museum Basel». In addition a note handwritten inscribed «Hans Joachim Müller Frankfurt a/M gemalt von seinem Freunde Matthäus Merian d. Jüngeren gemalt um 1647 im 26ten Lebensjahr von Matth. Merian. Herrenbildnis [...] von meinen lb. [lieben] Eltern geerbt 1932 (Hans Joachim Müller Frankfurt a/M painted by his friend Matthäus Merian the Younger painted around 1647 in the 26th year of Matth. Merian Portrait of a gentleman [...] inherited from my dear parents in 1932)».
H 101,
The portrait of Hans Joachim Müller by Matthäus Merian the Younger (1621 - 1687) was painted in 1647 and was acquired by the Kunstmuseum Basel in 1890, where it can still be found today under the inventory number Inv. 435. The latter date can be assumed as the terminus post quem for the creation of this impressive copy, which is almost as large as the original, as indicated both by the framing typical of the period and the copyist's handwritten reference to the Basel Museum.
We would like to thank Mr Gabriel Dette, Assistant Curator Old Masters, Kunstmuseum Basel, for the kind remarks via
Provenance: private property of the family of Neveu, Durbach.
