High Baroque wall crucifix in the style of Georg Petel
Probably South Germany 17th C. Carved wood, painted in polychrome colours and partially gilt. Christ on the cross with his feet one above the other, wearing a loincloth. Cross beams profiled at the end.
H 76,5, W 32 cm.
The present crucifix clearly borrows from the work of the important Bavarian sculptor Georg Petel (1601/02 - 1634), in particular from a cross now kept in the treasury of the Munich Residenz (inventory no. 157). He was highly esteemed for his filigree ivory carvings in the princely art chambers of Europe and was in close contact with contemporary artists such as Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1649). The Flemish painter-prince created a drawing that became the model for the Munich cross via the mediation of an engraving by Paulus Pontius (1603 - 1658).
