Historism Pietà in Renaissance style
Probably South Germany
H 42,
The Pietà, also called «Vesperbild» in the German-speaking world, is a form of devotional painting that has been widely used since the late Middle Ages and depicts the Virgin Mary mourning her dead son. It is not a scene from the Holy Scripture, but one of independent pictorial invention, which has its origin north of the Alps and culminates in Michelangelo's famous sculpture in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Provenance: Gertrud von Lukasiewiecz, Bad Säckingen; by succession transferred to private property Hexental.
