Pietà in Baroque shrine
Probably South Germany 18th C. Carved wood with flattened back and remains of old polychromy. Shrine painted in black and partially gilt. Representation of Mary holding her dead son on her lap in a richly decorated, tabernacle-like shrine. Signs of age. Pietà chipped and with missing parts.
H 12,2, W 8 cm (pietà),
H 29,3, W 22, D 11 cm (shrine).
The Pietà, also called «Vesperbild» in the German-speaking world, is a form of devotional painting that has been widely used since the late Middle Ages and depicts the Virgin Mary mourning her dead son. It is not a scene from the Holy Scripture, but one of independent pictorial invention, which has its origin north of the Alps and culminates in Michelangelo's famous sculpture in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Probably the Pietà and the shrine were created independently from each other and were joined together at a later date, which is indicated by the strongly differing dimensions.
Provenance: private collection Ortenau.

deutsch Pietà im Barockschrein
Wohl Süddeutsch 18. Jh.
.
Provenienz: Privatsammlung Ortenau.
