Mandylion mit Riza und aufgesetzten Strahlennimben
Mandylion with riza and attached halos. Probably Russia 19th C. Egg tempera over chalk and gold ground on panel, and silvered as well as partially gilt brass. Cloth with the face of Christ held by an angel. Verso inscribed in Cyrillic «This not man-made figure with diligence and this my painted master of this icon Tujasnoi». Finely embossed and chiselled riza with floral ornaments and attached halos as well as gilt applications. Minor signs of age.
H 45,2, W 36,4 cm.
Mandylion is the name for the cloth with the imprinted face of Christ, which wasn't created by hand but appeared in a miraculous way. Since the 6th Century reports about these images of Christ occurred increasingly. They are considered as authentic reproductions of the face of Christ.

Wohl Russland 19. Jh. Eitempera über Kreide- und Goldgrund auf Holz, und Messing, versilbert sowie partiell vergoldet. Tuch mit dem Gesichtsabdruck Christi, von einem Engel gehalten. Verso in Kyrillisch bez. «Diese nicht von Menschenhand gemachte Gestalt mit Fleiß und diese meine gemalt Meister dieser Ikone Tujasnoi [...]». Fein getriebene und ziselierte Riza mit floralem Dekor und aufgesetzten Nimben sowie vergoldeten Applikationen. Min. Altersspuren.

Mandylion nennt man das Tuch mit dem auf wundersame Weise - nicht von Menschenhand - entstandenen Gesichtsabdruck Christi. Ab dem 6. Jahrhundert treten vermehrt Berichte über die Entstehung solcher Christusbilder auf, welche als authentische Wiedergabe des Antlitzes Jesu gelten.
