Pichhavai mit Darstellung des Sarat Purnama (Herbstvollmondzeremonie)
Pichhavai with representation of Sarat Purnama (autumn full moon ceremony). North India, Rajasthan, Nathdwara mid 19th C. India ink, colours and gold on cloth. The Shrinathji, standing prominently on a canopy throne, forms the central figure of the autumn full moon festival. He is accompanied by three gopi on each side and six gondolas with divine couples. The representation is framed by 26 small fields with depictions of seasonal festivity.

The centre of the autumn full moon ceremony «Sarat Purnama» is Shrinathji, the seven-year old manifestation of Krishna. Since he grew up among cowherds, he is traditionally accompanied by cowherds «Gopi».

Der frontal auf einem Baldachinthron stehende Shrinathji bildet die zentrale Figur des Herbstvollmondfestes. Gekleidet in dem für ihn typischen Krachhni, wird Shrinathji seitlich von je drei Gopi begleitet. Im Hintergrund erscheint der Wald von Brindaban mit Früchte tragenden Bäumen und Palmen unter einem klaren Sternenhimmel mit dem Vollmond und sechs Gondeln mit göttlichen Paaren. Unterhalb des Gottes sind der Felsenberg Govardhan, auf dem die Puja-Zeremonie stattfindet, und eine Ochsenherde. Gerahmt wird die Darstellung von 26 kl. Feldern mit jahreszeitlichen Festen.

Das Zentrum der Herbstvollmondzeremonie «Sarat Purnama» bildet Shrinathji, die siebenjährige Manifestation von Krishna. Da dieser unter Kuhhirten aufwuchs, wird er traditionell von Kuhhirtinnen «Gopi» begleitet.
