Art Deco «vegetable» brooch with tourmalines and diamonds
Germany 1930s. Yellow and white gold 14k. Rectangular openworked brooch with engraved leaf and volute decoration, set with four old-european-cut verdelites weighing in total approx. 0,74 carats, accompanied by five old-european-cut diamonds weighing in total approx. 0,75 carats VS, wesselton. Hallmark and manufacturer's mark «EK», not interpreted.
H 1,8, W 4,1 cm. 10,7 g.
Like a small garden, the finely faceted diamonds and verdelites here adorn the openworked, engraved leaf brooch. Jewellery of this kind was first created in the Art Deco period.
Tourmaline was already known in antiquity but has only been used in Europe since 1700. The word tourmaline goes back to the Singhalese word «turamali», which means «stone with mixed colours». Today there are various names for the different colour varieties on the market. For example, the stones from pink to red are called rubellite and the green stones are known as verdelite.
