Philipp Jacob Steyrer, abbot in St. Peter from 1772 to 1795, was a driving force at building and developing the monastery and began to extensively purchase books for the local library right after his inauguration. After the secularization, the majority of precious manuscripts got to the Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe and the University Freiburg i.Br. In the left background of the painting, the two emblems of the monastery St. Peter and of abbot Steyrer himself are depicted.

Philipp Jacob Steyrer, Abt in St. Peter von 1772 bis 1795, war eine treibende Kraft bei der Erbauung und Entwicklung des Klosters und begann kurz nach seinem Amtsantritt mit extensiven Bücherkäufen für die dortige Bibliothek. Nach der Säkularisierung gelangte der Großteil der kostbaren Handschriften in die Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe sowie in die Universität Freiburg i.Br. Im Bild links hinter dem Abt sind die beiden Wappen des Klosters St. Peter im Schwarzwald und des Abtes Steyrer dargestellt.
