Tanagra figurine with colour traces
Probably Boeotia 3rd C. BC. Terracotta, with white grounding and remains of yellowish and flesh-coloured paint. Statuette of a young woman in a striding position, wearing a floor-length chiton with rich drapery and a himation above it. Partially rubbed. Restored foot.
H 35,4, W 13,3 cm.
At the end of the 4th century BC, the town of Tanagra in Boeotia developed into a leading production site for small-format terracotta sculptures. The elegant figurines, mostly elaborately coiffed and ingeniously dressed ladies of the upper class, which have been brought to light during excavations since the 19th century, probably served as good luck charms, but above all as grave goods. Their coloured paint has often been preserved in remnants, as the present work vividly demonstrates.
Receipt and Authentication: Peter Lankoff, Vogtsburg, 09.09.2011, in copy.
Provenance: according to the consignor purchased at the Galerie Peter Lankoff, Vogtsburg, in 2011; since then private collection Müllheim.

deutsch «Tanagräerin» mit Farbspuren
Wohl Böotien 3. Jh. v. Chr.
