Jan Victors was a painter of the Golden Age of Dutch painting. This cultural heyday brought forth outstanding painters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt and alongside them many painters specializing in certain pictorial subjects. Often referred to as a student Rembrandts, but probably only assumed as such, Jan Victors was an expert in history and genre painting, who masterfully captured events at the market, the dentist or butchers.
In the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam there is a painting by his hand dating 1648 which resembles the present work in format, motif and composition as well as in the reproduction of the figures (inventory number SK-C-259).
