Giambologna, after
Naples end 19th C.
«Mercury».
Bronze, dark patinated, and red-brown veined marble. Foundry mark «M. Amodio N.» on the plinth.
H 70, W 15 cm.
The small-format sculpture of Giambologna's (1529 - 1608) famous Mercury from 1578/80 in the Bargello in Florence is a cast by the Fonderia Michele Amodio (1817/20 - 1913) in Naples. It shows the herald of the gods in a flying position. Giambologna thus overcame the laws of statics, to which sculpture is especially committed. As his works were in great demand, the artist created small sculptures of them himself with the help of his assistants in the late Renaissance. In the 19th century, the bronze casts based on them were very popular with travellers on the Grand Tour.
Provenance: private collection Markgräflerland.
