Cold-painted Tibetan Buddha Shakyamuni
Tibet 16thC. Partially cold-gilt bronze and painted in polychrome colours. On a double, half all-round lotus throne, Buddha sits in dhyana asana, hands in bhumisparsha and avakasha mudra. His face is richly painted, his hair is matte blue and the hem of his robe is copper-coloured, finely chiselled, his earlobes are openworked in an oval shape. Base closed with a plate.
H 25, W 16,4 cm.
The small circles in the Buddha’s hand and feet give an indication of the ancient manufacturing technique, in which the figure and base were cast separately and later joined with pins. The polychrome setting has been applied cold, which contributes to its luminous colourfulness, but at the same time makes it more sensitive to external influences.
Provenance: private collection Frankfurt a.M. and Baden-Baden.
