Magnificent Japanese cabinet with peering eagle
Japan, Meiji period. Carved and patinated wood, bone, mother-of-pearl, bronze and lacquer. Four very flat bracket feet, four runners with volute feet set across the corner, rectangular frame with richly carved apron, coffered fields, slightly overhanging top. Rectangular cabinet top with stepped pediment, acroteria in the form of maple leaves and crowning superstructure with peering eagle in a swooping posture. In the top divided into three bays with a nested system of drawers, doors, sliding doors and open shelves. The central shelf is accentuated by miniature architecture in the form of a Shinto shrine. Drawers, doors, friezes and back panel adorned with lacquer work and magnificent bone and mother-of-pearl carvings in the form of bouquets of flowers, birds and dragons. Numerous supports, side panels and shelves richly carved with stylised flowers, geometric patterns and rising dragons.
