Karl Hauptmann

«The Feldberg Painter»
24th April 1880 – 7th April 1947

Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.

In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.

In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.

Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.

On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

Printed by Christian Herold, Hamburg 1739. 504 p. (not collated). Numerous sheets with music examples. Half leather binding with gold embossing. Good age-related condition. Binding later. Larger water stains at lower margin of the text block and at the head. Slightly light-stained.

Johann Mattheson (1681 - 1764) was a German composer, opera singer and patron. As a contemporary and friend of George Frideric Handel he gained his first experience as a choir director as the conductor of the Hamburg Opera Choir. He composed numerous operas and oratorios and wrote a number of writings on music. The «Perfect Capellmeister» was received vividly by his contemporaries. Today it counts as the first coherent melody theory written with didactic intent.

Gedruckt bei Christian Herold, Hamburg 1739. 504 S.. Zahlreiche Notenbeispiele. Halbledereinband mit Goldprägung. Guter, altersbedingter Zustand. Einband später. Größere Wasserflecken am unteren Rand des Buchblocks und am Kopfschnitt. Leicht gebräunt.

Johann Mattheson (1681 - 1764) war ein deutscher Komponist, Opernsänger und Mäzen. Seine ersten Erfahrungen als Chorleiter sammelte der Zeitgenosse und Freund Georg Friedrich Händels als Leiter des Hamburger Opernchors. Er komponierte zahlreiche Opern und Oratorien und verfasste eine Reihe von Schriften zur Musik. Der «Vollkommene Capellmeister» wurde von den Zeitgenossen lebhaft rezipiert. Er zählt heute als erste zusammenhängende Melodielehre, die in didaktischer Absicht verfasst wurde.
