Museale gotische Pietà
Museum quality Gothic Pietà. Lower Rhine 1460 - 1480. Carved wood with hollowed back side, painted in polychrome colours. Rare depiction of a so-called «joyful Pietà» with Mary in silent transfiguration and spiritual knowledge of the redemption, the corpse of her son on her lap. Verso inscribed on an old label «No.2 Gotik Pieta». Good original condition with remnants of the original polychromy in an excellent state. Signs of age, paint loss.
H 71,3, W 48 cm.
The motif of the Pietà does not come from the biblical representation, but from the religious poetry of the 12th/13th Century. Early Pietàs are sometimes conceived as so-called «joyful Pietà», whereby the joy of the accomplished redemption finds its expression in a painful smile. «It does not depict the desolate lamenting figure of the Mother of God; it does not depict purely human, earthy grief. This Pietà is real mysticism. [...] In this Pietà, the intimate contemplation of Christ's suffering and the transfigured joy of the redemption gained, merged with the adoration of Mary into a delighted unity.» (quote from Prof. Paul H. Hübner from his expert report of 07.03.1951).
Expert report: Prof. Paul H. Hübner, conservator and restorer of the municipal collections, Freiburg i.Br., 07.03.1951, in copy.
Provenance: estate Prince Johann Georg of Saxony, Umkirch Castle; Eugen Berninger, Franz Vögtle and Ferdinand von den Berg, art dealer, Freiburg i.Br.; since 1951 private collection Freiburg i.Br.
Purchase contract: Eugen Berninger, Franz Vögtle and Ferdinand von den Berg, art dealer, Freiburg i.Br., 17.02.1951, in copy.

deutsch Niederrhein 1460 - 1480. «No.2 Gotik Pieta».
