The politically active painter Gustave Courbet (1819 - 1877) demanded the transfer of the Victory Column from the Place Vendôme to the Hôtel des Invalides for aesthetic and political reasons. In 1871, the column was finally dismantled during the Paris Commune. Courbet was made responsible for the dismantling as a member of the commune and had to bear the costs for the reconstruction in 1873 alone. He could not completely pay off this huge amount during his lifetime.
Provenance: purchased at the Galerie Schwind in 2013, Frankfurt a.M.; since then private collection Freiburg i.Br.
We would like to thank Mr. Jörg Horn, Berlin, for the scientific advice vial E-Mail, based on photos, 23.09.2019.
We would like to thank Mrs. Stefanie Michels, Galerie Schwind, Frankfurt a.M., for the kind remarks via E-Mail, based on photos, 24.09.2019.

Provenienz: erworben 2013 in der Galerie Schwind, Frankfurt a.M.; seitdem Privatsammlung Freiburg i.Br.
