Staurothek icon. Russia 19th C. Egg tempera over linen and chalk ground on panel, and bronze. The Crucifixion of Christ on an inserted bronze cross with the mourning Mary and John, Longinus as well as further saints. Signs of age, retouching.
H 48,5, W 53,5 cm.
The name Staurothek derives from the Greek word for the reliquary of the Cross, on which this type of icon is based on. Instead of the original reliquary a metal cross, mostly made of bronze, was inserted.

Russland 19. Jh. Eitempera über Leinen und Kreidegrund auf Holz, und Bronze. Kreuzigungsszene Christi auf einem eingesetzten Bronzekreuz mit den Trauernden Maria und Johannes, Longinus sowie weiteren Heiligen. Altersspuren, Retuschen.
H. 48,5, B. 53,5 cm.
Der Name Staurothek kommt aus dem Griechischen und bedeutet Kreuzreliquienbehälter, nach dessen Vorbild wurde dieser Ikonentypus geschaffen. Anstelle des ursprünglichen Reliquienbehälters wurde ein Metallkreuz, meist aus Bronze, eingefügt.
