«The first theater». 1979. Acryl und Stoff/Papier. Mosaik aus verschieden gemusterten Stoffquadraten, teilweise übermalt. Unsign. Verso auf Rahmen zwei Galerieetiketten. H. 75,5, B. 55,5 cm.
Ab den 1970er Jahren beschäftigt Miriam Schapiro sich hauptsächlich mit Collagen, die sich aus Stoffen sowie gemalten Elementen zusammensetzen. Diese Collagen nennt sie Femmages. Ihr Essay «Waste Not Want Not: An Inquiry into What Women Saved and Assembled - FEMMAGE», geschrieben 1977/78 mit Melissa Meyer, beschreibt Femmage als die Anwendung von Collage, Assemblage, Découpage und Fotomontage in der Form, wie sie Frauen traditionell anwenden: beim Nähen, Schneiden, Applizieren, Kochen etc.
