Rangstatue des Suque-Männerbundes
Grade figure from the Suque brotherhood. Ambrym, Vanuatu. Carved tree fern. Signs of age.
The grade figures of Ambrym were only allowed to be carved to honour a deceased Suque member. Originally, the Suque was one of many hierarchical secret brotherhoods, which dominated the social life on the islands of Vanuatu that were formerly known under the name «New Hebrides». Later, the name Suque was used for many profane brotherhoods of the Northern islands of Vanuatu which kept only the rules for performing the ceremonies and the ritual of the top grades as a secret. To rise to a higher social rank the member had to sacrifice pigs, mats and money. It was believed that high-ranking members of the brotherhood take similar functions and positions among the spirits after their death in the Hereafter and that their presence protect the village. The grade figures should grant a relationship to the powerful ancestor. They were made from tree ferns which trunk were cut off about a man's height, so that the lower end thickened. After hewing the tree, the powerful head of the grade figure was carved from the thickened end.
Provenance: purchased before 1970; since then private collection Alsace.

deutsch Ambrym, Vanuatu. Baumfarn, geschnitzt.
Provenienz:
erworben vor 1970; seitdem Privatsammlung Elsass.
