Bedeutende Empire-Kommode
Important Empire commode. France circa 1810. Veneered mahogany, ebony and brass. On the busts inscribed «Asenath Isis». Good restored condition.
Asenath is an Egyptian woman in the Book of Genesis, who the Pharaoh gave to Joseph to be his wife. Isis is a high-ranking Egyptian deity. After the French Campaign in Egypt 1798/99 Egyptian motifs were increasingly used as furniture ornaments.
Frankreich um 1810. Mahagoni, furniert, Ebenholz und Messing. Auf flachem Sockel, dreischübiger Korpus, seitlich flankiert von sich nach unten verjüngenden, in Büsten endenden, gekanteten Säulen als Darstellungen berühmter Ägypterinnen. Auf den Büsten bez. «Asenath Isis». Guter, rest. Zustand.

Asenath ist eine Ägypterin aus dem Alten Testament; sie wurde Josef vom Pharao zur Frau gegeben. Isis ist eine hochrangige altägyptische Göttin. Nach dem Ägyptenfeldzug Napoleons 1798/99 wurden antik-ägyptische Motive zunehmend in der Möbelornamentik verwendet.
