Apulian red-figured Amphora in the form of the Panathenaic Amphorae
Circa 340 - 330 BC. Light brown pottery, orange-red slip, painted in black-brown, white and ochre yellow. Profiled foot, ovoid body. Narrow neck with funnel-shaped, flared mouth. Two strap handles from the neck to the shoulders. On both sides female heads facing left wearing a two-row pearl necklace, a diadem and earrings as well as the hair in a patterned kekryphalos. Under the handles large palmettes with lateral volutes. Laurel branch running around the mouth edge. One handle restored.
H 40,5, Diam. 14 cm.
This vessel is made in the elegantly elongated form of the Panathenaic amphorae, which are widespread throughout Greek culture and were presented to the winners filled with olive oil at the end of the sporting competitions of the same name in Athens. In this case, the slender body of the vase is open at the bottom, so that, for example, wine poured in at the top would leak through the foot into the ground, where it could seep away as a libation for the souls living in Hades.
Certificate: Jürgen Haering, Galerie am Museum, Freiburg i.Br., n.d.
Provenance: purchased at Jürgen Haering, Galerie am Museum, Freiburg i.Br., in the 1980s; since then private collection Müllheim.

deutsch Apulische rotfigurige Amphora
Um 340 - 330 v. Chr.
Zertifikat: Jürgen Haering, Galerie am Museum, Freiburg i.Br., o.D.
Provenienz: erworben in den 1980er Jahren bei Jürgen Haering, Galerie am Museum, Freiburg i.Br.; seitdem Privatsammlung Müllheim.
