Cylinder musical box with flute playing and clock by Johann Heinrich Heller
Bern circa 1880. Walnut, walnut burl and elm, veneered, ebonised, and fire-gilt bronze. Rectangular case with inlays, partially ebonised, lateral handles in gilt bronze and hinged cover. On the front a clock with white dial, Roman minute scale, Breguet hands. Eight-day movement, striking on bell, triggering every hour the musical movement with ten different melodies and flute playing, under glass cover, framed by three cartouches, the central one depicting a painted view of a Swiss lakescape. Manufacturer's label with the melodies's data and numbered «No. 2842». Original lock. Very good fully functional condition. Flute playing must be tuned.
H 27, W 76, D 41,5 cm. Original keys and one wind-up key later added.
The melody repertoire includes ten opera arias and orchestral works by famous 19th century composers such as Verdi, Rossini, Strauss and Bellini.
Cylinder music boxes, known in particular as a Swiss specialty, conquered the European market in the 19th century. Johann Heinrich Heller (1830 - 1906), one of the most important music box manufacturers, founded his manufactory in Bern in 1866. Professional and commercial skills led to the collection of his music boxes by most European courts, especially by the Austrian Imperial family.

Bern um 1880. Nussbaum, Nusswurzel und Rüster, furniert, ebonisiert, und Bronze, feuervergoldet. Rechteckiges Gehäuse mit Band- und Fadeneinlagen, teils ebonisiert, seitlich vergoldete Bronzetragegriffe und Klappdeckel. Auf der Schauseite Uhr mit weißem Zifferblatt, römischer Minuterie, Breguetzeiger. Acht-Tage-Gehwerk mit Schlag auf Glocke, Auslösung der Walzenspieluhr zur vollen Stunde. Das Spielwerk mit zehn Melodien und Flötenspiel, unter Glasabdeckung, gerahmt von drei Zierkartuschen, mittig mit einer gemalten Schweizer Seenlandschaft. Etikett der Manufaktur mit Angaben der Melodien und «No. 2842» num. Originalschloss. Sehr guter, funktionstüchtiger Zustand. Flötenspiel muss gestimmt werden.

Das Melodienrepertoire umfasst zehn Opernarien und Orchesterwerke berühmter Komponisten des 19. Jahrhunderts wie Verdi, Rossini, Strauss oder Bellini.
Die insbesondere als Schweizer Spezialität bekannten Zylindermusikdosen eroberten im 19. Jahrhundert den europäischen Markt. Johann Heinrich Heller (1830 - 1906), einer der wichtigsten Spieluhrenhersteller, gründete 1866 seine Manufaktur in Bern. Fachliche wie kaufmännische Geschicke führten dazu, dass seine Spieluhren in die meisten europäischen Höfe, allen voran im österreichischen Kaiserhaus, Einzug hielten
