Nobility portrait painter
Probably Bern circa 1730.
Albrecht Friedrich Count of Erlach.
Oil on canvas, relined. Unsigned.
H 79,
Albrecht Friedrich Count of Erlach (1696 - 1788), imperial chamberlain and captain of the Swiss regiment Tillier, was a member of several highly respected orders of chivalry. In the present painting, however, he was only depicted with the House Order of Fidelity of the Margraviate of Baden, which he received on 28 January 1728. The present painting must have been created a little later. The sitter «comes from one of the oldest noble families in Switzerland, which was raised to the rank of count by Emperor Charles VI in 1712, and was born in Bern. From 1727 he was member of the great council in Bern, in 1729 acting Town Hall Mayor and in 1735 Landvogt of Morges. With the military office of a dragoon colonel, he was Schultheiss of the Republic of Bern in the odd years between 1759 and 1786.» from: Dr. Lars Adler, statement, Darmstadt, 24.02.2016.
