Halberg-Krauss, Fritz
1874 Stadtprozelten - 1951 Prien a. Chiemsee.
«Isar unterhalb Grünwald mit Burg Schwaneck (Isar below Grünwald with Schwaneck Castle)».
Oil on cardboard. Signed lower left and inscribed «Mchn. (Munich)». Verso monogrammed, dated (19)44, titled probably by a different hand and numbered «5090/2».
H 38,5,
The present painting opens the view across the wild river landscape of the Isar valley in turbulent autumn weather to the historicist Schwaneck Castle in Pullach, originally the residence of its builder, the sculptor Ludwig von Schwanthaler, and a testimony to his lively, romantic enthusiasm for the Middle Ages. It is a typical work by the painter of the Munich School, who captured the extraordinary scenic beauty of the Alpine foothills, especially the extensive floodplains of the Isar or the shores of Lake Chiemsee, in an impressionist manner.
Provenance: private collection Munich.
