Johann Daniel Schöpflin (1694 - 1771), one of the most famous sons of the town of Sulzburg and one of the leading figures of the intellectual life of the Upper Rhine area in the 18th century, was professor of history and rhetoric at Strasbourg University from 1720. In 1760, he was commissioned by Margrave Charles Frederick of Baden-Durlach to research the history and significance of the House of Baden. In the following years, this endeavour resulted in the seven-volume history work «Historia Zaringo Badensis», written in Latin, which established the subsequent genealogical reference of the Margravial and, from 1806, Grand Ducal House of Baden to the ducal dynasty of Zähringen, which had ended with Berthold V in 1218. It contains several copperplate engravings with depictions that refer to the history of the House of Baden, such as views of the castle ruins of Zähringen and Hohenbaden or the castles of Baden-Baden and Rastatt, as well as a large map of the baroque fan-shaped city of Karlsruhe.
Provenance: Library of the last Prince-Bishop of Basel Franz Xaver von Neveu (1749 - 1828); after his death it became private property of the family of Neveu, Durbach.
