Military protective icon with Christ Pantocrator
Russia after 1800. Egg tempera and chalk ground on panel, partially gilt. Deepened middle field. Assembly of 16 saints, crowned by Christ Pantocrator in an arched field on a bank of clouds. Signs of age, slightly scuffed.
H 35,5, W 31 cm.
The saints depicted are, in the lower row, Cyril, Anastasius the Great, Clement of Rome, Antipas of Pergamum and Charalambos of Magnesia, in the middle row, Stephen of Suorza, John and Nicetas of Novgorod, Maris of Omer and Quiricus, and in the upper row, Theodor Tiro, Boniface of Tarsus, Artemis of Antioch, Andrew Stratelates, John the Warrior and Julitta. By selecting saints who were either church fathers, martyrs of the 4th century, members of the military or persons geographically related to Russia, this icon could be a protective icon of a member of the Russian army or a missionary.
Provenance: private collection Lower Saxony.

deutsch Militärische Schutzikone mit Christus Pantokrator
Russland nach 1800. Eitempera über Kreidegrund auf Holz, partiell vergoldet. Vertieftes Mittelfeld.
Provenienz: Privatsammlung Niedersachsen.
