Schütz, Christian Georg I
1718 Flörsheim - 1791 Frankfurt a.M.
Rhine harbour with ships and wine barrels.
Circa 1780. Oil on panel. Signed lower left and dated 1768 probably by a different hand. Professionally cleaned and newly varnished. Retouchings.
H 28, W 41 cm.
After his training as a facade and decoration painter, Christian Georg Schütz I, founder of a successful dynasty of artists, demonstrated his skills for numerous princely clients and wealthy citizens of the city of Frankfurt a.M. A trip to the Rhine between Mainz and Koblenz inspired him to create his poetic river landscapes, which explore the tension between ideal and reality. He combines hills bathed in soft, subdued light - often with pastoral staffage figures - either with the castle romanticism of the Rhine Valley or with ancient fantasy ruins fitting in the taste of the time.
Authentication: We would like to thank Mr Erwin Rehn for the authentication via E-Mail, based on photos, 24.06.2020
Provenance: private possession Markgräflerland.

deutsch Schütz, Christian Georg I
1718 Flörsheim - 1791 Frankfurt a.M.
