Doriot, Théodore
French sculptor second half
Sappho with lyre.
Brown patinated and partially polished bronze. On the legs of the chair twice signed.
H 21,5,
The sculptor, who worked in Neuilly-sur-Seine, was a pupil of François Rude and became famous in France mainly for his sculptures of the national personification Marianne, who adorns the French Senate and numerous town halls. His Sappho shows the ancient lyrical poet in a seated pose, following in composition James Pradier's Sappho, which was celebrated at the Salon of 1852 and is now in the Musée d'Orsay.
