Zügel, Heinrich von
1850 Murrhardt - 1941 Munich.
«Gelbe Kuh (yellow cow)». Well-built yellow cattle on fresh, lush green pasture ground.
Oil on canvas, relined. Signed lower right and dated 1875. Verso and on the stretcher numbered probably by a different hand «[...]Z 35» (probably for Eberhard Zahn).
H 35,
Heinrich Zügel, who was granted noble status in 1907, studied at the academies in Stuttgart and Munich, where he had a lively exchange with his role model, the renowned animal painter Anton Braith (1836 - 1905). Strongly influenced by the rural environment of his youth as the son of a shepherd, farm animals such as sheep and cattle played a central role in his śuvre. His loose, impressionistic painting style and his ability to reproduce the light and the atmosphere in the pastures and fields made him an extremely sought-after master of animal painting around 1900.
Provenance: studio of the artist at Wolkenhof, Murrhardt; collection Eberhard Zahn, St. Wolfgang; private collection North Baden.
Catalogue raisonné: Diem 148.
