Manju netsuke of the three wise monkeys. Japan
The three wise monkeys come from the teaching of the Buddhist God Vadjra which probably came in the 8th Century to Japan. Most likely the similar pronunciation of the classic Japanese form «zaru» and the Japanese word for monkey led to the belief that the three wise monkeys, which should report on the deeds of the people for the gods during the Koshin-Machi, see, hear and speak no evil. Today, the three monkeys are known as lucky symbols in Japan.
