The original icon with this type of depiction is said to have been painted by Luke the Evangelist and was located in a monastery in Constantinople since the 5th Century, where a miraculous spring was supposed to cure blindness. The monks leading the blind to the spring were called Hodegoi - Greek for leading the way - and gave the icon its name.
