Two Attic black-figure lekythoi. Greek 5th C. BC. Pottery, painted black and white. Signs of age, chipped, restored.
The lekythos is a particular type of Greek vase, which frequently served as a burial gift in the 5th century before Christ. Furthermore they were used as vessels for the female toilette, as well as for the storage and conservation of precious liquids, like olive oil and various aromatic oils. While the shape is characteristic and did not change significantly, there are different types in decoration: black-figure, red-figure and painting on white ground examples.
Provenance: purchased in the 1960s at Römisch-Germanisches Museum, Cologne; since then private collection Dr. Dr. Albert Gilles, Cologne, and succession.
