Der Turmalin war schon in der Antike bekannt, wird aber erst nach 1700 in Europa verwendet. Das Wort Turmalin geht auf das singhalesische Wort «turamali» zurück, was so viel bedeutet wie «Stein mit gemischten Farben». Heute haben sich im Handel verschiedene Bezeichnungen für die unterschiedlichen Farbvarietäten etabliert. So werden unter anderem die Steine von Rosa bis Rot als Rubellit und die grünen Steine als Verdelith bezeichnet.

Tourmaline was already known in antiquity, but has only been used in Europe since 1700. The word tourmaline goes back to the Singhalese word «turamali», which means «stone with mixed colours». Today there are various names for the different colour varieties on the market. For example, the stones from pink to red are called rubellite and the green stones are known as verdelite.
