«The Feldberg Painter»

Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.
In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.
In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.
Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.
On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

Museale Schwarzwälder Aposteluhr
Museum quality Black Forest apostle automaton clock. Gordian Hettich son, Furtwangen, Black Forest circa 1890. Walnut, carved and partially painted, and brass. Movement with striking on three gongs and automaton mechanism released every hour. Movement inscribed «G.H.S.F. 25». Good functional condition. Console later. Pendulum and key. Provenance: private collection Rastatt.
Gordian Hettich Sohn, Furtwangen, Schwarzwald um 1890. Nussbaum, geschnitzt und partiell bemalt, und Messing. Auf gestuftem Sockel, detailreich geschnitztes Gehäuse in Form einer Kathedrale mit gotischen Elementen, auf deren Balustrade zur vollen Stunde die zwölf Apostel erscheinen. Messingzifferblatt mit arabischer Minuterie und arabischem Minutenring, Messingzeiger. Metallgespindeltes Gehwerk mit Schlag auf drei Tonfedern und Auslösung des Apostelautomaten zur vollen Stunde. Auf Werk bez. «G.H.S.F. 25». Guter, funktionstüchtiger Zustand. Wandkonsole später. Uhr
Die wohl berühmteste Uhr mit Apostelautomat ist die Prager Rathausuhr, die seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts über diesen Mechanismus verfügt. Eine weitere seltene Automatenuhr aus dem Hause Gordian Hettich Sohn mit Figuren der vier Evangelisten und Petrus befindet sich im Badischen Landesmuseum, Schloss Bruchsal.
