Professor Hermann Dischler

25th September 1866 – 20th March 1935

Hermann Dischler was born on the 25th of September in 1866 in Freiburg i.Br. He received his artistic training in the art school in Karlsruhe, he was student of Gustav Schönleber. Thereafter he was engaged as a painter in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald area.

1894, after he finished his studies, he built himself an artist’s workroom in Freiburg i.Br. At this time he went on a lot of trips and his trusty camera followed him everywhere. Five years later he started to number and comment his artworks, which he collected in 29 «Bildbüchern (books of pictures)».

In the winter months from 1905 to 1907 he stayed in the Todtnauer Hütte, where a lot of his oil studies arise.
The snowy winter landscapes became his typical theme and he called himself «Schneemoler (snowpainter)». 1917 he received his professorship by Grand Duke Friedrich II.

In 1927 he had an exhibition with artists like Curt Liebich, Julius Heffner, Wilhelm Nagel, Wilhelm Wickertsheimer a.o., they called themselves «Die Schwarzwälder (the Black Forests)». He died on the 20th of March in 1935 in Hinterzarten. Today his works are extremely appreciated because the snowy landscape present the untouched nature.

«Skizzenbuch - Ein Tag in NY (sketchbook - one day in NY)». Three dimensional lens box, assemblage of glass, lenses, painted wood pencils, painted stones, India ink, pencil, cardboard, wood, brushes and a palette knife, in a white lacquered object box. Signed lower right, dated 2009 and numbered «Edition 3/12». Verso signed again, dated 2009, titled and numbered 3/12, in copy. Verso a label of Gallery Schüppenhauer, Cologne, with the work's data.
Unique work from a series of twelve individually designed examples. Published in 2009 by the artist in cooperation with Gallery Schüppenhauer, Cologne, on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name for the 75th birthday of Mary Bauermeister. The edition sold out quickly, two examples have been purchased by the acquisition committee for the Federal Art Collection of Germany, were exhibited at the Bundeskunsthalle and illustrated in the catalogue. Since the very successful solo exhibition at the Smith College Art Museum in Northampton, USA, in January 2015 the artist's works are in more demand than ever before and the prices in the international auction market have increased considerably. Enclosed a letter by the artist, explaining the idea and creation of the edition «one day in NY», in copy.

Unikat aus einer Serie von zwölf individuell gestalteten Exemplaren. Herausgegeben 2009 von der Künstlerin in Kooperation mit der Galerie Schüppenhauer, Köln, anlässlich der gleichnamigen Ausstellung zum 75. Geburtstag von Mary Bauermeister. Die Edition war schnell ausverkauft, zwei Exemplare wurden von der Bundesankaufskommission erworben und anschließend in einer Ausstellung der Sammlung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in der Bundeskunsthalle ausgestellt sowie im Katalog illustriert. Seit der großen Einzelausstellung im Januar 2015 im Smith College Art Museum in Northampton, USA, sind die Arbeiten der Künstlerin gefragter denn je und die Preise auf dem internationalen Auktionsmarkt deutlich angestiegen. Anbei ein Schreiben der Künstlerin zur Idee und Entstehung der Edition «one day in NY», in Kopie.
