South Swabian Master after
German around 1890.
«Ausgießung des Heiligen Geistes (the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit)».
Oil over gold ground on panel. Monogrammed lower right «FS» and dated (18)90.
H 140, W 60 cm (support). Framed.
Copy of a late Gothic altarpiece from around 1480. Due to its stylistic peculiarities, the Pentecost painting can be attributed to a master from southern Swabia (gettyimages no. 1213134344). Replicating masterpieces has always been part of an artist's training. Particularly at the end of the 19th century painters often turned to traditional German painting as a result of a growing sense of nationalism in Germany. At the same time, the copy reflects the artistry of the copyist as well as the conception of art in this time period, which found its greatest glory in historicism.
Provenance: Bantikow Castle, Wusterhausen/Dosse.
Condition report
Good overall impression. Margins rubbed from framing, several barely visible stress cracks (approx. 11 to
27 cm), here and there retouching in the lower area, isolated rubbing and tiny spots of paint loss mainly in the gold ground, faint scratch (approx.
15 cm) lower middle with resulting minor paint loss (approx.
3 mm to
1 cm).
