1952. Pottery, with grey and black slipware painting as well as knife engraved, partially glazed in black and white. Under the base stamped «MADOURA PLEIN FEU» and «EDITION PICASSO» as well as inscribed by hand «EDITION PICASSO MADOURA».

In 1946 Picasso experimented with clay for the first time in the Madoura Studio of Suzanne and Georges Ramié where he from then on worked with great energy with the new material. The shape of the objects usually forms the basis for the design and later painting. In the «Vase a deux anses hautes», for example, he shapes a vase into a human body with astonishing precision, containing handles that become arms. Together with a vase identical in form (Ramié 213), this clay sculpture is often referred to as «King and Queen». The voluptuously bulbous vase bodies from the heyday of Picasso's ceramic work serve here as the design support of a male and female body, which Picasso designed as two imaginative counterparts.
