These are five of the ten plate volumes of the French-language "Encyclopédie", which was printed between 1770 and 1780 in Yverdon in western Switzerland and comprised a total of 58 volumes. 32 authors were involved in this work, which was modelled on the famous Parisian encyclopaedia by Denis Diderot and Jean Le Rond d'Alembert.
Provenance: Library of the last Prince-Bishop of Basel Franz Xaver von Neveu (1749 - 1828); after his death it became private property of the family of Neveu, Durbach.
