Karl Hauptmann

«The Feldberg Painter»
24th April 1880 – 7th April 1947

Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.

In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.

In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.

Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.

On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

Righetti, Francesco nach
After Francesco Righetti. Italy probably 19th C. Pair of striding centaurs. Dark patinated bronze on green marble bases. One chained centaur and one centaur with a fleece. Unsigned. Minor chipped.
H (including base) 29 respectively 33,1, W 19,5 respectively 20 cm.
Centaurs after the model of Francesco Righetti (1738 - 1819), who based his sculptures on the so-called Furietti centaurs of Hadrian's villa in Tivoli. Antique sculptures experienced a little upswing in the 19th Century thus contemporary artists reissued them as small bronze figures.

Paar schreitende Zentauren. Bronze, dunkel patiniert, auf grünen Marmorsockeln. Ein gefesselter Zentaur und ein Zentaur mit einem Vlies. Unsign. Min. best.
H. (mit Sockel) 29 bzw. 33,1, B. 19,5 bzw. 20 cm.
Zentauren nach dem Vorbild von Francesco Righetti (1738 - 1819), welcher sich auf die sogenannten Furietti Zentauren aus der Villa Adriana in Tivoli stützte. Antike Skulpturen erlebten im 19. Jahrhundert eine kleine Renaissance, als zeitgenössische Künstler sie in Form von Kleinbronzen neu auflegten.
