Spitzweg, Carl
1808 Munich - 1885 ibid.
Standing male nude, seen from behind.
Circa 1831 - 35. Pencil on paper. Estate stamp (rhombus and signature stamp, Lugt 2307) lower right and inscribed probably by a different hand «N 61 1/2 L». Verso a pencil drawing of a woman's head looking upwards, behind a wall. Verso on the passepartout on a collection label typographically titled, inscribed «Carl Spitzweg, 1808 - 1885» and numbered «281a - 15 - 61».
H 42,2, W 28,8 cm (sheet). Unframed.
Spitzweg's nude drawings initially follow the academic tradition. Later, «the line of the drawing [...] becomes long and straight, a certain sharpness emerges. The hatchings are related to copperplate engravings; they create acute angles to the outlines, as the slant of the line is increased in relation to the outline. The drawing gradually changes into a subjective view and personal line language.» from: Siegfried Wichmann, Spitzweg, Die frühesten Spitzwegbilder, Reihe für vergleichende und angewandte Kunstgeschichte (R.f.v.u.a.K.), without number, Lipp Verlag Munich n.d., p. 5.
«Several nude drawings are known from Spitzweg's œuvre, some of them even bear the name of the person depicted. Most of these nude drawings were done between 1831 and 1835.» (Detlef Rosenberger, Oberostendorf, 01.06.2020)
.
