Röth, Philipp
1841 Darmstadt - 1921 Munich.
Flock of sheep in the marshland.
1st half 1860s. Watercolour, charcoal and opaque white on strong, chamois wove paper. Signed lower right.
H 22,8,
A shepherd wanders with his small flock of sheep and a herding dog through a lowland wet meadow overgrown here and there with trees and bushes. A flock of birds buzzes through the sky, the tops of the trees are reflected in the water surface of a pond lightly rippled by the wind. Nothing seems to disturb the balanced tranquillity and picturesque simplicity of this landscape, which can be assumed to be near Dachau. According to the authors of the catalogue raisonné, this watercolour can be assigned to the early work of the landscape painter Philipp Röth, a virtuoso master of the Paysage intime, both from the stylistic point of view and on the basis of the type of signature.
